Dan might also have some good suggestions in that he suggested some follow-ons for me. There are undoubtedly other starter resources. My sister likes Hochschwender a lot and is chewing her way through Allwright now. I recommend these having recently read all three. For a structured, text-like but reasonably accessible approach, you might consider Basics of Buddhism by Pat Allwright. If you want a somewhat glossier, easy read, consider the Buddha in Your Mirror by Hochschwender et al. If you tend toward the cerebral, you might try Richard Causton's book The Buddha in Daily Life. There are three good starters to my view, depending on your style.
